Planning a trip to Abu Dhabi

To visit Abu Dhabi without rushing, plan three to five days: that is the recommendation of the emirate's tourism board, and enough for the Grand Mosque, the Saadiyat museums, a beach day and Yas Island. This Abu Dhabi travel guide covers how long to stay, where to base yourself, a one- to three-day itinerary, when to go and what things cost. Each section links to a detailed guide.

Is Abu Dhabi worth visiting?

Abu Dhabi had 26.6 million visitors in 2025, and the reasons are easy to list:

  • Museums and architecture: the Louvre Abu Dhabi and three more museums in the Cultural District on Saadiyat Island, plus the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Qasr Al Watan palace.
  • Beach resorts: about 9 km of white sand on Saadiyat, where turtles nest from March to July.
  • Theme parks: four large parks on Yas Island.

It is an easy place for first-time visitors: English is widely spoken and cards are widely accepted. It suits travelers less if you want free public beaches near your hotel or plan to spend summer days outdoors. How it compares with its neighbor: Abu Dhabi vs Dubai.

How many days do you need in Abu Dhabi?

The tourism board recommends at least three to five days. Hotel guests in 2025 stayed 2.9 nights on average, which covers the main sights but leaves little time for the beach.

  • 1 day: the Louvre and the Grand Mosque.
  • 2 days: one day on Saadiyat, one in the city.
  • 3 days: add Yas Island or a full beach day.
  • 4–5 days: add beach days, a desert safari or a day trip to Al Ain or Dubai.

The day-by-day plan is below.

Where to stay in Abu Dhabi

The main sights are spread over three areas, so pick your base by what you plan to do most.

  • Saadiyat Island: beach resorts and the museum district. About 15 min to downtown and 25 min to the airport. See Saadiyat hotels and holiday apartments.
  • Yas Island: theme parks, Yas Beach and the Formula 1 circuit; about 15 min from the airport.
  • Downtown and the Corniche: city hotels near the Corniche Beach and the Qasr Al Hosn fort.

We compare the areas, with hotels for each, in where to stay in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi itinerary: one to three days

The plan uses Saadiyat as a base. From the island, the Grand Mosque is 24.1 km away and Yas Island 19.3 km.

DayWherePlanGetting there from Saadiyat
1Saadiyat IslandMorning at the Louvre Abu Dhabi (allow 2–3 hours); lunch on the Mamsha Al Saadiyat promenade; afternoon at Kai Beach or your hotel beach; evening at teamLab Phenomena10–15 min by taxi
2The cityMorning at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (book online); Qasr Al Watan palace and its evening show, Palace in Motion (check the show time on the palace's site); the Corniche if time allows20 min to the mosque
3Yas IslandOne theme park (five to seven hours) or Yas Beach; evening at Yas Marina15 min

Days 4 and 5: the extra days are for what the first three skip.

One day only: the Louvre in the morning and the Grand Mosque in the late afternoon. Two days: days 1 and 2. On day 1, the Zayed National Museum or the Natural History Museum can replace the beach. From 11 December 2026, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi joins them. More ideas: things to do in Abu Dhabi, Yas Island and Abu Dhabi tours.

Good to know

The Louvre Abu Dhabi is closed on Mondays, and on Fridays the Grand Mosque is open to visitors only 09:00–12:00 and 14:30–21:00. If your Saadiyat day falls on a Monday or your city day on a Friday, swap them.

Abu Dhabi for families and couples

Families will find a kids' club and shallow beaches at the Saadiyat resorts; the Saadiyat Rotana takes children from 6 months. Older children are better served on Yas Island, with Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld and SeaWorld. The Natural History Museum and the Louvre are free for under-18s.

Couples will like the quieter Saadiyat resorts, such as Park Hyatt, and an evening at Qasr Al Watan or teamLab Phenomena. Add a Mamsha dinner by the sea; see where to eat on Saadiyat.

Best time to visit Abu Dhabi

The best time to visit Abu Dhabi is from October to March, when days are 18–28 °C; the tourism board names December as the best month. March and April are warmer, at 20–30 °C. From May to September, days reach 44°C (111°F) and more, so plan museums, malls and the indoor parks for the daytime and the beach for early morning or evening. April and May are usually the cheapest months; prices peak around the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and Taste of Abu Dhabi in winter. Getting to Abu Dhabi and getting around

Getting there

  • By air: Zayed International Airport (AUH) is 25 min from Saadiyat by taxi. Airport taxis start at AED 20 (≈ $5) plus the meter; Uber and Careem also work. See flights to Abu Dhabi and the airport guide.
  • From Dubai: since 30 September 2026, Etihad Rail trains take about an hour, from AED 39 (≈ $11); the Abu Dhabi station is outside the center, in Mohamed Bin Zayed City. Buses cost AED 25 (≈ $7). See Dubai to Abu Dhabi.

Getting around

  • Taxi: the easiest option. Fares start at AED 5 (≈ $1), then AED 1.82 (≈ $0.50) per km, with a minimum fare of AED 12 (≈ $3).
  • Ride-hailing: Uber and Careem work, and you can book the Abu Dhabi Taxi app.
  • City bus: pay with a Hafilat card, which costs AED 10 (≈ $3); one trip costs no more than AED 5 (≈ $1). The Darb app shows live arrivals.
  • On Saadiyat: the electric ART bus AR2 links teamLab Phenomena, the Louvre and Saadiyat Walk, and the Abu Dhabi Link on-demand bus serves Saadiyat and Yas for AED 2 (≈ $0.54) with a Hafilat card.
  • Rental car: useful for several stops in a day, with Darb tolls and parking to plan for; see car rental in Abu Dhabi.
  • No metro: Abu Dhabi has none, so a day with several sights means a taxi, a bus or a car. All of it is in getting around Abu Dhabi.

Visa, money and local rules

  • Visa: depends on your passport. Citizens of the UK, the US and most EU countries get a free entry stamp on arrival for up to 90 days; your passport must be valid for at least six months. Rules for other passports: Abu Dhabi visa rules.
  • Money: the UAE dirham (AED), fixed at 3.6725 to the US dollar. Cards are widely accepted.
  • Tipping: not required. Many restaurants add a service charge to the bill.
  • Weekend: Saturday and Sunday.
  • Alcohol: served in licensed venues, mostly hotel bars and restaurants; the legal age is 21.
  • Clothing: light summer clothes work most of the year. Cover your shoulders and knees at religious and government sites, and during Ramadan.
  • Flight schedules: as of October 2026, some flights in the region run on adjusted schedules or are cancelled. Check your flight status with the airline before you book and again before you fly.

Visiting Dubai and Abu Dhabi in one trip

The cities are 136 km apart, and the train or bus makes a day trip easy in either direction. A common plan is two or three nights in Abu Dhabi with a day in Dubai, or a few nights in each. If you are based in Dubai, a guided day tour covers Abu Dhabi's main sights in about nine hours, and a private transfer takes about 1 hr 15 min each way.
