Peak season
Is December a good time to go?
Yes, if you book early. The weather is mild, the sea is still pleasant for swimming, and there is more on than in any other month. The cost is the highest prices of the year, especially in the first week and over the holidays.
What to do
- UAE National Day, December 2. The country marks the founding of the federation in 1971 with fireworks and celebrations; the public holiday in 2026 falls on 2 – 3 December 2026.
- Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The final race of the season takes place at Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island on 4 – 6 December 2026. If your dates overlap with race weekend, book your hotel early.
- Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opens. Frank Gehry's museum in the Cultural District opens on 11 December 2026. Book tickets in advance; see Guggenheim Abu Dhabi: opening date and tickets.
- Beach days. Days are around 25°C (77°F) and the sea about 24°C (75°F), fine for swimming in the warmest part of the day.
- Winter festivals. The Mother of the Nation Festival comes to the Abu Dhabi Corniche in December, and the Liwa International Festival in the desert runs 11 December 2026 – 2 January 2027.
Prices and crowds
December is peak season, together with January. The first week, with National Day and the Grand Prix, and the Christmas to New Year period are the most expensive and the first to sell out. Mid-December is a little calmer.
