Do you need travel insurance for Abu Dhabi?
Saadiyat Travel Guide editorial team · Published 2 October 2026

For most visitors, travel insurance is not a condition of entry to the UAE, but health care for tourists is not free, so a policy is still worth buying. The one official requirement we found is for the five-year multiple-entry tourist visa, which asks for health insurance valid in the UAE. This page explains what that means, what treatment costs, what a travel policy should cover, and how to buy one before you fly. We checked the rules and prices as of October 2026.

Is travel insurance required for a UAE visa?
It depends on the visa:
- Five-year tourist visa. The UAE government's visa page asks for a health insurance policy that applies in the UAE and is valid for 180 days.
- Visa-free entry (US, UK, EU and many other passports). The official pages we checked don't list insurance as a condition. Some websites say that every tourist must show a policy, and we found no official source for that.
- Visas issued through an airline, hotel or agency. The government page doesn't list an insurance requirement for them, but the company that issues the visa may ask for one. Check with the issuer.
The rules for each passport are in our Abu Dhabi visa guide. Insurance isn't just paperwork, though: the costs below are the real reason to buy it.
What health care costs visitors in Abu Dhabi
Emergency treatment is given to everyone, with or without insurance, but afterwards the hospital bills you. Private hospitals can ask a visitor to pay before leaving, and follow-up care is billed in full.
Costs vary a lot by hospital. As an indication, an insurance broker estimates a visit to a general practitioner in a private clinic at AED 150–500 (≈ $41–136) and emergency treatment in a private hospital at AED 500–2,000 (≈ $136–545), before tests, scans or an overnight stay. We found no official tariff from the Abu Dhabi Department of Health for visitors, so treat these figures as an estimate.
The emergency numbers are 999 for the police and 998 for an ambulance; the full list is in our travel tips.
What a travel insurance policy should cover
Compare these points, not the price alone:
- Emergency medical treatment and hospital stays. Check the maximum amount and whether the policy pays the hospital directly or reimburses you later.
- Medical evacuation and repatriation. This is usually the most expensive item without insurance, and many policies include it.
- Cancellation and interruption. Cover applies only to the reasons listed in the policy, so read that list before you rely on it.
- Baggage and delays. Useful for lost or delayed bags and missed connections.
- A 24-hour assistance line. You will want a phone number that works from abroad.
- Existing conditions. Medical conditions you already have are often excluded unless you declare them.
Water sports, desert trips and theme parks
Standard policies often exclude hazardous activities or cover them only with an add-on. Before you book, check the policy's list for the things visitors do around Abu Dhabi:
- Desert. Dune driving, quad biking and sandboarding on a desert trip; see our Abu Dhabi tours guide.
- Sea. Jet skis, diving and parasailing.
- Air. Hot-air balloons and skydiving.
- Theme parks. Rides on Yas Island are usually fine, but check the wording.
If an activity is excluded, ask your insurer whether a sports add-on exists before you pay for the trip.
Heat, sun and ordinary risks
Most claims on a beach holiday are ordinary: dehydration or heat exhaustion in summer, sunburn, a cut on a rock or a fall by the pool. The summer months are the hottest, which is one reason many visitors choose the cooler season: see our best time to visit page. Drink water, cover up at midday and take shade breaks, whichever month you travel.
How to buy insurance for Abu Dhabi
Buy a policy when you book your flights and hotel, so that cancellation cover applies from the start. Online purchase takes a few minutes; you need your dates and the travelers' details.
- Match the dates to your trip, including the day you leave.
- Choose the cover level. Check the medical limit, the excess (the part you pay) and the exclusions.
- Add what you need. Add an activity option if you plan desert or sea activities.
- Keep a copy. Save the policy and the assistance number on your phone and in the cloud.
Most insurers want the policy bought before you leave home, so don't plan to buy it at the airport. What a trip costs overall: Abu Dhabi trip cost.
If you need a doctor
Call the insurer's assistance line when you can, and tell the hospital that you are insured. Keep receipts, the medical report and the discharge papers: you will need them for a claim. In an emergency, call 998 first and sort out the paperwork afterwards. Bring your regular medicines in their original packaging with a prescription: some medicines that are legal at home are restricted in the UAE, and the rules are in our travel tips.
